At OMEP Australia, we are proud to share a significant update reflecting our ongoing commitment to the global mission of early childhood care and education (ECCE). This week, we received a crucial request from Mercedes Mayol Lassalle, the President of OMEP World, highlighting the urgent financial challenges facing our global organization.

Mercedes brought to our attention the pressing situation regarding the annual fees owed by for Asia Pacific National Committees. The total amount needed to cover these fees is AU$3087. This financial support is essential for OMEP World to continue its vital work and to uphold its strategic goals for the year, including fulfilling international commitments related to the Tashkent agenda.

The recent World Assembly in Bangkok underscored the critical financial situation of OMEP at a global level. Despite the extraordinary achievements and increased visibility of OMEP in recent years, the growing scope of our commitments requires robust financial resources. The Decade for ECCE initiative, as highlighted in our Bangkok Declaration, represents a transformative action towards ensuring every child’s right to quality early childhood education. This mission relies heavily on the solidarity and support of each OMEP member worldwide.

In response to this call for support, OMEP Australia has demonstrated our dedication and solidarity with our international counterparts. After a discussion and a majority vote, we have decided to cover the outstanding fees for the four countries. This decision not only reflects our commitment to supporting our sister organizations but also aligns with our core mission of alleviating the suffering of children globally.

Our contribution is a testament to the strength of our collective efforts and the importance of standing together in times of need. By assisting these countries, we are ensuring that OMEP World can continue to drive impactful initiatives and uphold our shared vision for a better future for all children. This decision supports several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. By supporting the annual fees for countries struggling to meet their commitments, OMEP Australia is contributing to the global effort to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” (SDG 4). This support helps these countries remain active members of OMEP World, allowing them to participate in and benefit from global initiatives that aim to improve early education systems.

Financial support for ECCE also has implications for SDG 1, which seeks to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere.” Investing in early childhood education is crucial for breaking the cycle of poverty. High-quality ECCE can significantly impact children’s long-term educational outcomes, health, and overall well-being, thereby contributing to poverty reduction efforts. By assisting countries that are financially struggling, OMEP Australia is helping to reduce inequalities in access to global networks and resources. SDG 10 focuses on reducing inequalities within and among countries. Ensuring that all OMEP member countries, regardless of their financial situation, can contribute to and benefit from global ECCE initiatives helps to level the playing field and address disparities in early education.

Furthermore, OMEP’s global solidarity also reflects SDG 17, which emphasises “strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development.” By supporting the financial needs of other countries, OMEP Australia is reinforcing international cooperation and partnerships, crucial for achieving sustainable development goals. This collective action highlights the importance of global partnerships and mutual support in addressing shared challenges.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our members for their unwavering support and dedication. Your contributions and active participation are vital in making such support possible. Together, we are making a difference and reinforcing our collective commitment to the right to quality early childhood care and education.

Thank you for being an integral part of this global mission. Your continued engagement and support are invaluable as we strive to create a brighter future for children around the world.
With gratitude,
The OMEP Australia Team
