A major initiative has been the development of three children’s books connected to Papua New Guinea, where locally available children’s books remain limited, as part of OMEP Australia’s advocacy for children’s rights and literacy.

These books are intended to be sold at the airport, creating access for both residents and visitors in a context where children’s literature from and about Papua New Guinea is not widely available.

A writing competition was held for preservice teachers to create a Papua New Guinea children’s book, supporting local authorship and encouraging future publishing pathways.

Two books have already been published: Tiko the Talking Tree and Avu and the Magic Stone.

The book Our Year In Papua New Guinea is a celebration of Papua New Guinea’s places, traditions, and people, inspired by a year of lived experience in the country. It is designed for the many expatriates and tourists seeking to take home a meaningful connection to Papua New Guinea. Proceeds from book sales will be directed into future writing competitions and publishing projects.
