In cooperation with UNICEF, OMEP Australia has established a hand washing, teeth cleaning and nose blowing educational project in isolated Aboriginal communities, in Australia, and in Poro, Papua New Guinea.

Volunteers from Oro Province were brought to Perth for a month and given intensive lectures and workshops, as well as school visits and general cultural enrichment. They were joined by a teacher from Sri Lanka, sponsored by University Graduate Women of WA.

Funds were donated to assist the child victims of the Eastern Japan Great Earthquake.

Building funds, teacher salaries, and a wide range of curriculum and play materials have been sent to Oro Province, along with a fresh water tank and money for food for the children when crops failed.

Dr Dawn Butterworth travelled to Poro, Popondetta, PNG to train 8 volunteers to be early childhood educators, to open this post tsunami elementary school and to demonstrate good practice.

Each year, a book bag containing toiletries, toys, drawing materials, reading book and basic clothing such as socks and undies, along with a welcoming letter is distributed to newly arrived refugee children on behalf of OMEP Australia

During a visit to PNG, Dr Butterworth was asked to provide urgent assistance with village schools in Oro Province. Subsequently, OMEP Aust provided roofing iron for Inota/Ajora Village School to keep the children dry from the monsoon rains. At Beama Elementary School, $300 was donated to buy much-needed stationary materials.

n order to celebrate the United Nations Year of Deserts, picture, story books and games on deserts and water conservation were donated to remote Aboriginal desert community schools throughout Australia.

Coordinated by Joan Waters, Vice-president of the Asia-Pacific Region, US$31,650 was raised by all the National Committees of OMEP. $10,000 was given to Sri Lanka (Matara District) and Indonesia (Aceh Province).
